Proud To Sponsor Local Heroes Awards

19-02-2015

Riggs Autopack is extremely proud to have been associated with and to have sponsored the 2BR Local Heroes Awards over the past 2 months, and stories of bravery, courage and community spirit were told at the recent awards presentation. Winners were treated to a glittering dinner at Turf Moor as guests including Burnley FC Manager Sean Dyche, celebrated the very best of East Lancashire and recognised our unsung heroes. In a moving ceremony, some of the biggest cheers of the night went to Liam Menmuir. Liam's friend James Goodship tragically drowned after getting into difficulty at Lake Burwain in Foulridge. Since then he's worked tirelessly to fundraise for a memorial garden in honour of the 17 year old. However, it was Community Champion Margaret Unsworth who scooped the overall awards. Nominated by her daughter for her commitment to volunteering in Burnley Wood and making sure everyone in the community has someone they can rely on. Programme Controller at 2BR, Gemma Baron, paid tribute to all the winners she said: "Once again we've heard some truly inspirational stories. Our winners have gone above and beyond for their community showing courage and bravery. We've been overwhelmed by the number of nominations this year and judging has been particularly hard. To know there are so many great people in our area, it makes you truly proud to be from East Lancashire". There was also an emotional moment when the mum of Hayley Barker, Lisa, picked up the "In memory award" in honour of her daughter. Hayley won 2 awards at the event in 2012 before sadly losing her battle against Leukaemia exactly a year ago. Lisa is now working to make sure Hayley's legacy lives on by helping other sick children do amazing things. Other winners included Kelvyn Foley who saved his Grandma's life when she had a heart attack and Pete Goble who gives up his spare time to help Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue. Meanwhile Colne in Bloom was named as the Pride of Pendle.
