LAST week the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, published the School Food Plan, drawn up by Henry Dimbleby and John Vincent, co-founders of Leon restaurants.
The premise of the Plan is to increase the quality and take up of school meals (currently 43%), and to divert some of the £1bn parents spend on packed lunches back into school meals. The Plan also encourages schools to develop a strong food culture that will inspire a love of good food in children, boost their academic performance and help them to lead healthy lives.
